The American Dream

The American Dream is one of the many themes in the book Of Mice and Men. This theme represents the longing of each person to suddenly come into money and power. They expect to do this by either working for it and building up a successful business, or maybe even not, a business, but just a small piece of land and a home. The reason so many people in America want to do this, is because they feel that if they gained money and power, then they will be more respected and liked, and they will be happier. Besides, the United States is rumored to be the land of opportunity, where a person could go to hit it off and get rich.

The dream of so many Americans is something that will probably never happen to most people. It is the dream of having so much power and wealth, that you would never have to get up in the morning and go to a job, in order to pay bills, eat, and live comfortably. This dream comes true for a large amount of people, but in comparison to the numbers of homeless and poor we have living here, it’s a tiny amount. The human race is always is always wanting more and more, and always dreaming of things, they could do, for example, when Curly’s wife talks about what she wants to do with her life. “” ‘Nother time, I met a guy, and he was in pitchers. Went out to the Riverside dance Palace with him. He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write me about it.” She looked closely at Lennie to see whether she was impressing him. “I never got that letter,” she said. “I always thought my ol’ lady stole it” (pg. 88)” In that quote she wants very badly to make something of herself and of her life, that she deceives her mind into making up excuses for why it didn’t happen. This is a common example of one of the aspects of The American Dream, where the dream only stays a dream.

Most people will think about their idea of a perfect life, and totally plan it out in their heads, but they will never get around to actually carrying out the plan, or even figuring out how to make the dream come true for them. In the story, George and Lennie both have the dream to save up enough money to buy a farm somewhere, and actually have a plan for it, but in the end, never get around to doing it. “ George said softly “I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we’d never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would.” “Then, it’s all off?” Candy asked sulkily.(pg. 95) Here, George is saying that he had known all along that they would never be able to buy a farm, just so he wouldn’t feel so bad about not buying a farm at all. Even though, in the middle of the book, before the trouble starts, the three men are very serious about going off and getting a place of their own. That was their American Dream, one which didn’t come true.

Most Americans want this American Dream to come true, because they feel it will make them respected throughout their lives. They also think that money and power will bring them undying happiness, which, as they find out later, is not true. Also, the United States has for a long time been rumored as being the land of opportunity, and a place where people go to get rich quick. This was what drew so many immigrants to America in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Almost all the reasons people have for seeking out their American Dream are reasons, which, in the end, turn out not to be true.

In conclusion, the American Dream is really a figment of everyone’s imagination, except for those lucky few who strike it rich or win the lottery. Out of all the millions of people in the world , a very few percentage of them are actually very wealthy, and and even smaller percentage are happy with all their wealth, or are actually having their reasons for becoming rich and powerful fulfilled. To put it shorter, even though the American Dream doesn’t always mean true happiness, it’s nice to have hope sometimes.
